Dj Kenzhero my Hero


A short history into Dj Kenzhero’s career

Combining Hip-hop, Soul, Funk, and Jazz Dj Kenzhero entices a specific crowd fitted with a specific ear. With his individual playing style he manages to invite an ensemble of intelligent and knowledgeable listeners, individuals who take their music very (very) seriously. DJKenzhero is no average dj, his sets are a testimonial to this, they explain his musical journey that has seen at least three decades, a musical journey that has seen the genres evolve from one sound to another. Although his background is generally hip-hop, djkenzhero manages to manoeuvre in and out of genres with ease exhibiting the history of other genres he includes in his sets, making him quite a versatile and adaptable dj.

Besides just being an exceptional dj, djkenzhero has also actively been a force in the industry, with his presentation of ideas outside being a club dj, he is also a closet music producer who has written title scores and scored for TV drama series’ Rotten, Society and Noah’s Arch respectively. His production has featured in respected musicians’ albums in the country and beyond. Djkenzhero has also been in theater productions such as the re-make of Shakespeare’s “ Two Gentlemen of Verona”, directed by world-reknowned director Marius Basson. He was part of a theatre production “ Plassi Kassie Plus Jozi “ that he co-wrote, which took place in 2005 and participated at the Reunion Island Art Festival.

DJKenzhero is known for his event concept and being a promoter with events such as Organix Open Mind Sessions that later gave birth to world known artists Tumi & The Volume, Native Yards in Cape Town with Masauko of Blk Sonshine and Radio Host Koketso Sachane as well as Think Funk with DJBob. He is the man behind the world reknowned Party People, which has been running since 2006 July. Party People takes place in at least 2 cities regularly –Cape Town and Johannesburg, and sporadically in other provinces like Port Elizabeth and Durban, even outside SA borders like Maputo in Mozambique. The event has featured national and international dj’s and artists such as Bahamadia, Kev Brown, Masta Ace, Tumi & the Volume, HHP, J-live, Wordsworth, 340ml and more.

Djkenzhero has shared stages with national & international icons and artists such as Mos Def, Dead Pres, Dwele and Bahamadia, to dj’s such as Questlove Of the Roots, DJPremier and DJ Bobbito to name a few. He has graced concept events - clubs – festivals such as Oppikoppi, Macufe Festival, Urban Voices, Rocking the Daisies, Standard Bank Jazz Fest, Miller Rock The Boat and more all over the country. He has an appeal in corporate events with recent events such as GQ Best Dressed and SA Style award. He was also named one of 50 GQ Best Dressed males and was Hype Magazine dj of the year in 2007.

DJKenzhero has also enjoyed a healthy presence on radio as featured dj, resident and as a host in all kinds of radio structures, from internet radio, campus radio, independent and national radio stations all across the country. He started featuring on Cape Town Internet Radio stations such as the redbullacademyradio in 2003 to Mutha fm in Cape Town. He moved to Pretoria to become a resident, producer and co-host of a morning show on Tuks FM called Eclectic Mix 2005-2006. He featured as a resident guest on the afternoon drive on Yfm’s Harambe with BadBoyT, Lee and Sanza, he featured on the morning drive with RudeBoy and Sanza on YFM and eventually as part of a three-man show in the evening with Lee and Ace of Spades on a show called The Bridge. He currently has a concept radio show on redbullacademyradio.com called AfroPicks with Lee Kasumba.
